When asked how Sugar and Dice wasestablished, the owner, Rachel, wanted to open a cafe as a child, and also be apsychotherapist! She visited another board games cafe in around 2014, (ThirstyMeeples in Oxford) and fell in love with the concept. She thought Liverpoolwould be a great place to start it, and so she left her job as a foodtechnology teacher and got the cafe started shortly after! Once the cafe was upand running, she started her psychotherapy training, qualifying last year.Rachel now sees clients in the cafe on the day it is closed, and she uses boardgames in therapy work as well. Ultimately Rachel hopes to start therapy groupswhen Covid restrictions are lifted further, using games as the games to helpbed in different psychotherapeutic concepts with the attendees.
The cafe hosts different events,from D&D and other RPG's to an open gaming night where anyone can comealong and meet other like minded gamers, and also an LGBTQI+ night, where aproportion of the cover charge is donated to local LGBTQI+ charities.
Situated on a double decker bus, Cakes and Ladders offers board games,cakes, beers from Earth Ale and coffee. This unique cafe all started with thecreative minds of Hywel and Ruth who not only love board games but also believein gaming as a means to get individuals to gather around. Ultimately the goalfor Cakes and Ladders is, “to reduce social isolation and improve healthand wellbeing for the residents of Haringey through board games.”
Back in 2018, the dynamic duo were in search for a location that will houseCakes and Ladders. Soon they found out that Alex from Earth Ale, was opening ataproom and needed a cafe on the double decker bus in the daytime and so Cakesand Ladders joined in.
It’s never too late to learn and enjoy a new board game or two and this isthe perfect chance to do so with Goodtime Games! This board game cafe speaksfor itself, always striving to give that "goodtime" experience forevery customer. The cafe opened it doors to people after COVID, and have grownever since with the help of an incredible team throughout the process.

d20 was created by 3 friends who share some love for board games! Theinspiration for how the cafe came to be blossomed from the lack of board gamecafes that were close to the Southampton area at the time. The trio thendecided to change that, and d20 was born in January 2017. It has beena labour of love for the three of them but they simply couldn't imagine doinganything else.
What makes d20 so special would be the communities that the cafehas fostered and grown. The owners believe that there's nothing better thanhosting events where people gather together to have a good time and formlasting friendships in the process. The cafe hosts all manner of events, fromcard games such as Magic the Gathering, Keyforge, Pokemon and YuGiOh, to RPGgames like Dungeons and Dragons, open gaming and social deduction nights, andeven themed quizzes!
